Job Purpose and Impact

Cargill China onshore steel trading has pivoted the business model away from physical merchandizing to quantamental trading which will use derivatives to execute trades. In order to drive successful execution of this strategy the team will focus to increase and deepen the analytical capability available. To that end the new role will work, hand in glove, with the book manager to harvest physical market insights, capture downstream demand dynamics, build relationships with a broad population of ferrous stakeholders and assess dynamics in market consensus. The ideal candidate will therefore have an industrial background with good connections across the ferrous space in China and a strong understanding of how the physical market operates. They will have a logical approach and strong communication skills with an affinity for quantitative thinking allowing them to translate unstructured or narrative insight into systematic data sets that can generate a trading edge for the team.

Key Accountabilities

•    Drive SnD analysis, linking ground survey results, challenge SnD assumptions and deliver analysis reports 40%
•    Collect insights around steel mills and physical traders; conduct field surveys (with or without 3rd party consulting companies) to collect key market data for trading and studying purpose 20%
•    Leverage a strong network with external funds to systematically survey market expectations 20%
•    Sensitive on market sentiment and macro/fundamental changes, capture the market trading themes 10%
•    Work alongside and together with BMs to drive analytics framework growth, identify trading opportunities and develop systematic data sets that will position the team uniquely in the market to achieve results 10%

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong commodity market understandings, excellent communication skills and ability to build connections within the Ferrous industry (steel mills, physical traders, construction contractors or LGFV companies)
• With 3-10 yrs experience in commodity analytics or strategist or trader role
• Knowing how physical market works, familiar with SND framework
• Mental agility and natural curiosity to understand how fundamentals are playing out across multiple markets
• Strong soft skills – Intellectual humility and agility, self-awareness, stress management, broad perspective, logical thinking, quantitative thinking and entrepreneurial spirit
• University Degree, finance or quant background will be an advantage
